Mortensen performed many of his own stunts and horse riding in the movie, and he bought TJ after filming wrapped. TJ now lives on Mortensen’s ranch in Idaho with other horses he purchased from the sets of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Hidalgo is a biographical western film about Frank Hopkins and his mustang, Hidalgo, who raced in Arabia in 1891. The movie was directed by Joe Johnston and written by John Fusco.
