Mini Guava and Cream Cheese Danishes

Inspired by guava and cheese pastelitos popular in Latin bakeries, this adorable two-bite treat is made super easy with store-bought puff pastry.

Step 1
Arrange racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and heat oven to 400°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2
On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry sheet to 10-inch square, then cut into sixteen 2 1/2-inch squares. Transfer to prepared baking sheet. Using sharp paring knife, score 1/4-inch border around each square. Using fork, prick holes all over inner square (not border). Freeze until firm, 20 minutes.

Step 3
Divide pastry squares between 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing evenly. Place cream cheese in center of each square, followed by guava paste.

Step 4
Brush borders with beaten egg and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake, switching positions of baking sheets on racks halfway through, until pastry is puffed and golden brown, 13 to 16 minutes. Let cool at least 10 minutes before serving.
